Future Kings Of England's self-titled debut is a mesmerizing gem that almost everyone seems to have missed out on. And if it hadn't been for mr Mellotron Storm so would I. A big thanks there! The band released 2 more albums since this debut and while they continued a high quality standard, none of them touches me as much as this one.

Future Kings Of England are a band that has found a unique spot for themselves inbetween majestic post-rock and psychedelic kraut/space-rock. You will also find traces of the mind-expanding 68-71 Floyd era, but it never really sounds like the Floyd to me. The band has more in common to GYBE, be it with more attention to melody and without those extreme quite-loud "dynamics". Both are a plus as far as I'm concerned.

Most songs are quite long, and gradually build, rise and release tension while going through big multiple bars spanning melodies. Fans of minor-key guitar arpeggios and soaring spacious leads will lick their fingers clean on this one. The sound is very open and organic, a bit rough in the drum department but all instruments resonate loud and cleary.

With such a low number of reviews I would certainly dare to call this one low-rated, even though the happy few who have visited this beautiful album have all rated it very highly. Very recommended to lovers of instrumental post-rock and space-rock.Review from Progarchives.com

Entheogenic - Spontaneous Illumination

The second full-length album by psychedelic dub producers Entheogenic is a genre-defining album that offers a mixture of ambient and chillout atmospheres with intelligent electronic dub, ethnic influences, deep drums and basses, and electronic and acoustic instruments. Spontaneous Illumination was produced by Piers Oak-Rhind and Helmut Glavar at Entheogenic Soundlabs in the southwest of France. Most of the sound samples used on this album -- such as birds and water -- were recorded by the artists in the beautiful environment of their studio. This album is timeless, beautiful, and skillfully produced with groove-oriented synthesizer music heavily laced with global samples. The album was released on c.o.r.n. recordings and was the first psy-chill album to make it to number one in the German chillout charts. These charts are assembled from the votes of 150 downtempo DJs. Highly imaginative, well executed psy/electronic/rock/ambient fusion. At times can be both beautiful and menacing - it inspires a real journey through one's emotional strata. Very good use of intrumental elements throughout: it's impossible to predict what's coming next, and that keeps it fresh, but the whole still makes sense once you reach the end.

Jade Warrior - Waves ( 1975 )

The influences of King Crimson are well in evidence on this, Jade Warriors second album.

Mostly meditative with just two side long pieces which are totally captivating with excellent jazzy passages of piano ( Steve Winwood), flute and guitar breaking gradually into the fragile floating atmospherics. A very masterfull and tastefull album for sure from this very unique band!

Porcupine Tree - On The Sunday Of Life (1991)

Quite different to there later releases, "On The Sunday Of Life" is sometimes a long and sprawling unfocused affair with quirky and catchy songs amidst the more atmospheric pieces. Having said that though, this is the more progressive Porcupine Tree of yesteryear with little gems in there such as "Radioactive Toy" "Music For The Head" and "It Will Rain for A Million Years"

Besides some of it's faults this album is much more highly recommended for the more progressive rock minded.

No dissapointments here for the faithfull "Ozric Tentacle" fan, in fact this is very much a return to form, hearkening back to there better more recent albums such as "Waterfall Cities".

It's all here with spaced grooves, cosmic textures and psychedelic rock excursions flying into the ether.

Somewhat of a disjointed album musically with far too many dissparate styles on offer, but does contain some hidden jewels for the Krautrocker.

Not on a par with later works such as "Morbius" but still worth a listen though!

Ozric Tentacles - Erpland (1990)

Not much more need to be said of this band .....except i still think this was there finest CD and the first i ever heard by them.

One of the few CD's i bought on the look of the striking cover and nothing else. I never looked back since.

The first song "Eternal Wheel" is a real stormer and just about sums everything up about what this band is about. Full on spacey rhythms / psychedelia and high flying guitar.

Not much has changed since this album, and some may critisize them of churning out the same stuff time and time again, but what they do do, is some of the finest psychedelic spacerock around .

Fifty Foot Hose - Cauldron (1967)

Amazing band from "San Fransisco" whose early forays into experimentation became well ahead of their time. Even today this album stands up remarkably well with it's mix of experimental electronics, psychedelic jams and songs.  The female vocals are really excellent too.

One of the very best albums to come from this particular period and astonishingly hardly dated .

Porcupine Tree - Metanoia (2001)

As ever "Porcupine Tree's " blend of psychedelic improvised rock is always most enjoyable. Lots of flavors here from ethnic to exotic with a touch "Ozric Tentacles", only on the darker side and far more experimental and spacey. 


There seems to be a lot of improvisation and free jamming going on, which is all very spellbinding and there's more of a dreamier quality to this album than many of there others. Take "Mesmer II" for instance which is really excellent and one of the more darker psychedelic rock pieces. Also outstanding is "Insignificance".

There's also some very odd moments on here too like the intro to "Mesmer III". I personally, would say this is one of there best releases , there are some real hidden gems in here and definitely warrants repeated listens for all the intricasies.

Arzachel ( 1969 )

This album seemed to have escaped my attention until just recently. I,m glad i discovered it though as this is really something special in the space rock psychedelic genre.

Arzachel was the earliest formation of STEVE HILLAGE and DAVE STEWART , which apparently at the time were also known as URIEL. HILLAGE was only 17 when he played guitar on this and the other members were of a similar age too. Being so young you might think this one and only album to be under par to the greater things yet to come by some of these band members. Not so!!! This is a surprisingly mature work musically in every sense. Featuring some of the most explosive and tripped out psychedelia your likely to ever hear.Certainly right up there with the very best , like a mixture of all the best parts of EGG, GONG, NATIONAL HEALTH., CARAVAN, PINK FLOYD and even some early STEAMHAMMER on track 5 ' Clean innocent fun.

Overall this album is a masterpiece with hardly any low points. The climactic ' Metempsychosis ' is one log fantastic jam. Alternating between slow and fast passages with HILLAGE andSTEWART duelling it out as it were and ending in blasts of distorted organ.

Amazing that the entire album was recorded in one session in one day. A brilliant album for sure. Don't miss out on it as long i have!!
